With increasing opportunities in cities, urban populations in India are experiencing rapid growth, resulting in higher population density and deteriorating air quality. This decline in air quality has contributed to increased premature deaths and reduced life expectancy. Currently, around 37% of India’s population resides in urban areas.
Approximately 63% of India’s population resides in rural areas, where vast open spaces offer significant opportunities for tree plantation, helping maintain the national green cover.
Forests are critical to India’s biodiversity, home to 80% of terrestrial species and a vital source of livelihood for over 300 million people. As per the Forest Survey of India (December 2021), the country’s total forest and tree cover is 24.62%, comprising 21.71% forest cover and 2.91% tree cover. In comparison, this was 23.39% in 2005, indicating a modest increase of 1.23% over 16 years.
Odisha has a 485 km long coastline spanning an area of 155,707 sq. km, stretching from Bahuda Mouth in Ganjam district (south) to Bichitrapur (Talashari) in Balasore district (north). This coastline extends across six coastal districts: Ganjam (60 km), Puri (155 km), Jagatsinghpur (67 km), Kendrapara (68 km), Bhadrak (50 km), and Balasore (80 km).
Lightning is one of the deadliest natural disasters in Odisha, claiming 2,557 lives over the past seven years—more than any other natural calamity. On average, lightning kills 365 people each year, with 12 fatalities per day, most occurring between May and August.
Recognizing this threat, on July 2, 2024, the Odisha State Government imposed restrictions on cutting palm trees and announced a plan to plant 1.9 million new palm trees. This initiative is based on scientific evidence that palm trees act as natural lightning conductors, helping to divert electric charges away from people and structures.
