Jhau Tree

The Jhau Tree (Casuarina equisetifolia)

The Jhau Tree (Casuarina equisetifolia), locally known as Jhau, is a fast-growing, salt-tolerant evergreen species that plays a critical role in protecting Odisha’s coastline. Extensively planted along beaches and dunes in districts like Puri, Ganjam, Jagatsinghpur, and Kendrapara, this tree is vital for coastal resilience and ecological balance.

With its needle-like foliage and deep root system, the Jhau tree serves as a natural shield against cyclones, sea surges, and coastal erosion—common threats along Odisha’s vulnerable Bay of Bengal shoreline. It stabilizes sandy soils, forms windbreaks, and acts as a green barrier between the sea and human settlements.

In addition to its protective role, Jhau trees support local livelihoods by providing wood for fencing, fuel, and small-scale construction. Their presence enhances the scenic beauty of coastal areas, making them popular in eco-tourism zones like Puri Beach and Gopalpur.

The widespread planting of Jhau trees under various coastal afforestation and disaster mitigation programs has made them a cornerstone of Odisha’s green defense line—contributing to a safer, greener, and more climate-resilient coast.
