Greener Cities. Cooler Neighbourhoods. Healthier Communities.
Rapid urbanisation is transforming our cities through expanding buildings, roads and infrastructure. At the same time, many urban areas are experiencing loss of green cover, rising heat exposure, pressure on biodiversity and declining access to quality green spaces.
At NetZero Planet Foundation, Urban Greening means creating protected green spaces within cities and their peripheral areas where native trees, biodiversity and communities can thrive together.
Our current Urban Greening approach focuses primarily on Miyawaki and dense native plantation in suitable available spaces, not roadside plantation.
We identify suitable available land within cities and peripheral areas where plantations can be developed, protected and maintained as integrated green spaces.
Potential locations may include:
Each site is assessed for available area, existing vegetation, soil conditions, water availability, ecological suitability, native species selection, protection requirements and long term maintenance.
Where site conditions are suitable, our Urban Greening projects primarily use the Miyawaki method and other appropriate dense native plantation approaches.
We aim to create diverse plantations using native and locally suitable species selected according to the ecological conditions of each site.
Our objective is not simply:
βPlant more trees in cities.β
It is:
βCreate protected green spaces where trees can establish, survive and grow.β
Site conditions, soil, native species composition, water requirements, ecological objectives and long term maintenance are important considerations in planning dense plantation projects.
For large scale urban plantation, our approach is to protect the plantation area as a whole rather than depend on individual tree guards.
Depending on site requirements, perimeter protection may include:
Area based protection helps reduce damage from grazing and avoidable disturbance while enabling more effective maintenance, monitoring and long term management.
Well planned urban green spaces can contribute to:
Urban greenery provides environmental and social benefits that extend well beyond carbon sequestration.
Our ambition is to progressively transform suitable available urban spaces into protected, biodiversity supporting green areas.
Success should therefore be measured not only by the number of trees planted, but also through indicators such as:
This shifts the focus from:
βHow many trees were planted?β
to:
βHow is the green space growing and developing?β
Where included within the project design, our Urban Greening plantations follow a structured approach to maintenance and monitoring for up to three years.
Each site's maintenance plan is determined according to its species, environmental conditions and project requirements.
We invite corporates and CSR partners to collaborate in developing protected and measurable urban green spaces.
Potential programmes may include:
For larger partnerships, we can connect:
creating opportunities to combine physical environmental action with Carbon Footprint awareness, Climate Pledges and Climate Conscious Bharat programmes.
We envision cities where suitable available spaces are transformed into protected green areas, native biodiversity is strengthened, plantations are maintained and monitored, institutions participate in greening, and communities understand their responsibility towards urban nature.
Urban Greening is not about finding space for individual trees along roads.
It is about creating space for nature within our cities.
Let's work together for a sustainable, prosperous and climate conscious Bharat.
